‘Kalau pergi Kuala Kubu,
Tulis nama atas batu’….
Loosely translated, ‘If you go to Kuala Kubu,
Write your name on a rock.’ 

Those are the first two lines of the lyrics for a song sang by the late singer Sudirman Haji Arshad, which made the sleepy town of Kuala Kubu Bharu known on the tourist map of Malaysia. Kuala Kubu Bharu is a town newly built after the Kuala Kubu town now known as Ampangan Pecah ( Burst Dam)  that was destroyed due to floods by a burst dam. Hence, the word Bahru (new) was given to the new town. I stopped in the town of  Kuala Kubu Bharu, taking the old trunk road from Tanjung Malim where I had to buy the famous Tanjong Malim Pau (Dumpling) for my parents.

My first stop was the old Kuala Kubu Road Railway Station which served as a transit point for passengers that were heading for the resort town of Fraser’s Hill, about forty five minutes drive through one of the narrowest and winding roads in Peninsular Malaysia. This station is also well known as the disembarking point for soldiers that were based in the famous Erskine Camp in Kuala Kubu, where it housed British and Commonwealth soldiers that served during World War II and the Malayan Emergency. During the Malayan emergency, Kuala Kubu Bharu was a’ Red Area’ as it was infested with communist insurgents. The then High Commissioner of Britain to Malaya, Sir Henry Gurney was killed by the communist insurgents along the Kuala Kubu Bharu – Gap road while returning to Kuala Lumpur after taking a short holiday at Fraser’s Hill.

The present Kuala Kubu Bharu town is still a sleepy town as it’s economy depends mostly on the communities of  the Royal Malaysian Police Academy, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Training College and the Royal Malaysian Signals army unit which are based there and also stopovers from visitors that are heading to Fraser’s Hill and back on weekends. Kuala Kubu also boasts an eighteen hole golf course which holds a nostalgic memory to my golfing moments as that’s where I scored my first ‘birdie’ at the first hole of the Kuala Kubu Bharu Golf Club course. The town is simply quiet even on weekdays as most of the younger generation of the town had left for cities that offered more than Kuala Kubu in terms of jobs and recreational facilities. There are a few buildings and structures that remains such as the Clock Tower which was built to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I in 1936, the St. Paul Catholic Church and the old Fire Station.

I ended my short visit to Kuala Kubu Bharu with a visit to the new railway station which is a far cry from it’s former station. I headed back home to Kuala Lumpur braving through heavy storm and traffic jams via the old trunk road .
